Yuri Alvear is a phenomenal Colombian judoka, the best ever in her country, who is a three-time world champion in 2011, 2013, and 2014, as well as a bronze medalist in 2015.

Yuri Alvear Orejuela, born on March 29, 1986, is a 36-year-old Colombian judoka and three-time World Champion in her division. Yuri was born in Jamundi, a suburb of Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city. Her father, Arnoy, is a builder, and her mother, Miryam, is a housewife. She also has her brother, Harvey.

From her early childhood Yuri Alvear was very talented in all sports, she participated in water polo, volleyball, handball and track and field. When she was 14, Ruperto Guauna, a judo coach at the Litecom school, was looking for a girl for the judo team and that’s how she became a judoka.

Yuri Alvear started judo late, but since she was already in good shape from her previous sport, she only needed to learn the technical aspects of judo. She is very close with fellow Colombian judoka Annie Cortez and is also a sparring partner. She won a bronze medal in the under 57 kg category at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In 2008 she competed in the Beijing Olympics and she finished 7th after losing to Cuba’s Anaysi Hernández in the main draw and lost a very close match to Spain’s Leire Iglesias in the repackage match, thus losing her chances of contending for her medal.

In 2009 she won the World Championships in Rotterdam. In the final, she defeated Hungarian Anett Mészáros, becoming the third South American judoka to win the title, after Natasha Hernández (of Venezuela) in 1984 and Daniela Krukower (of Argentina) in 2003. Two weeks before 2010 Pan American Judo Championships, she felt pain in her left knee after training and found that she had a torn ACL after visiting the doctor.

In 2012, she defeated China’s Cheng Fei to win the bronze medal at the London Olympics. This was her first Colombian Olympic medal in judo. In 2016, she made her Olympic comeback in Rio, where she won the silver medal, making her the fifth Colombian athlete to win two Olympic medals.
